Biography of Professor Malcolm Gillies

Professor Malcolm Gillies is the champion for school-university links in London. In the 1970s he trained as a secondary teacher of history and music, and believes in the importance of building clear pathways between schools, further education and universities.

Now the Vice-Chancellor of London Metropolitan University, he was previously Vice-Chancellor of City University London and a Vice-President of the Australian National University. A musician and linguist by education, Malcolm was successively President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and of the Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He has authored or edited a dozen books, including ‘Self-Portrait of Percy Grainger’, which gained an award of the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers in 2007.

Malcolm has particular interests in curriculum design, assessment policy and research impact. He has been on the board of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator, and currently serves on the Boards of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, Gresham College and London Higher.
