Abstract

On Thursday 20th May, as part of the RTD discussions on Community Cohesion organized by the Dialogue Society North, John Battle chaired a roundtable discussion on ‘Community Cohesion in Leeds’, to which community representatives from the Sikh community (Mr. Harbans Singh Sagoo) and the Muslim community (Dr. Hassan Al-Katib) attended. In his speech former MP John Battle discussed the issues of social cohesion in local areas, in the workplace and the neighbourhoods, giving particular examples from West Leeds. Other topics discussed included the role of faith communities in improving community cohesion; the role that different places of worship of various faiths play in developing cohesive neighbourhoods; and the role of women and immigrant communities in creating community dialogue. The roundtable discussion has been the second in the community cohesion RTD series, preceded by the RTD discussion with Assistant Chief Constable Jawaid Akhtar.
