Publications

Dialogue Society publications are both an outcome of and a contribution to dialogue at three different levels: community, policy development and academia.

Dialogue Society community-based publications consist of manuals for community organisations and publications for the public. The Dialogue Society is currently engaged in the production of a series of Dialogue Manuals which are geared towards community organisations. The aim of these manuals is to encourage community and faith organisations to actively engage with other communities by recording and disseminating know-how for projects which the Dialogue Society has found to be successful catalysts for community cohesion. The manuals provide detailed advice and exhaustive supporting documents to help organisations run events with confidence and success. The Dialogue Society will distribute these manuals widely across the UK.

Dialogue Society policy-related papers are geared towards national and local government. Each paper suggests a new idea or approach on a given policy-area while providing clear and specific recommendations towards its implementation. Recommendations are built upon experience at the community level. In January 2009, the Dialogue Society published a policy paper entitled "Deradicalisation by Default: The 'Dialogue' Approach to Rooting out Violent Extremism." It aimed to stimulate thinking about alternative approaches to preventing violent extremism and was received with great interest by policy-makers, parliamentarians and leading academics.

Academic publications are produced in response to a recognised need for objective, critical examination of the work of dialogue and as contributions to the study of the social and political issues with which it is engaged. The process through which these publications are produced brings academia, policy and community together, bringing new perspectives to bear upon the practices of each sector. In 2007 the Dialogue Society published the proceedings of a major conference it organised analysing the nature and methods of the Gülen Movement.
