15th November 2012 will see the first ever elections of local police and crime commissioners (PCCs) across the country. The Dialogue Society, Birmingham Branch, is inviting local people to come and consider what the introduction of this role will mean for local policing, and what kind of PCC they want for this area.
Local PCC candidates will be allotted 10-15 minutes to give their reflections, along with local politicians.
Attendees will have time to ask the speakers questions and to give their own perspectives.
Waseem Zaffar was elected as Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee for Social Cohesion & Community Safety in May 2012. Waseem was recognised for his services to the voluntary sector by HM Queen Elizabeth who awarded him an MBE in the Birthday Honours in June 2012. Waseem was elected as Labour Councillor on 5th May 2011 for the Lozells and East Handsworth Ward.
In 2005, Waseem was head-hunted by a city-wide organisation that provided training provision in basic skills. For five years, Waseem worked as their Development Manager before taking up his current role as Manager of Villa Business Centre in May 2010.
Waseem was appointed a Magistrate in 2008, originally serving on the bench at Sutton Coldfield Magistrates Court before moving to Birmingham Magistrates Court following the closure of Sutton in July 2011. read more
He was born in the West Midlands and he has worked in the area all of his adult life. He joined the West Midlands Police as a Cadet in 1974 and joined the service as a constable in 1976. He was initially posted to Brierley Hill Police Station and remained there for a number of years. During that time he performed duties as a uniformed front line officer on a shift and as a local community beat officer. He served as a Dog Handler, Court file preparation Officer and as a local Detective on the CID. read more
She was born, lived and educated in Handsworth, Birmingham, and spent over 30 years policing the West Midlands, leading national and international multi agency teams before retiring as a Detective Superintendent in 2010.
She joined West Midlands Police and started on the beat in the Handsworth area and worked my way across the West Midlands tackling a wide range of criminality including burglary, anti social behavior, terrorism, domestic extremism, organised crime and gang violence. She worked with many different agencies and people to develop innovative initiatives to protect the residents of the West Midlands. read more
