The 5th Annual Gateshead Community Dialogue Christmas Event took place last Saturday at Bensham Grove Community Centre, bringing together over 100 people from Gateshead and the wider region in a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Organised by the Dialogue Society North East Branch in partnership with local community organisations, the event focused on this year’s theme, “Building Community Trust.”

The gathering welcomed people from all walks of life, including representatives from the voluntary and third sectors, members of Northumbria Police, young people, families, and wider community members of all faiths and none. The diversity of attendees reflected the strength and richness of the local community and the shared commitment to dialogue, understanding, and social cohesion.

The event was honoured by the presence of Jo Curry, High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, who delivered the keynote speech. Her address highlighted the importance of trust, collaboration, and community engagement in strengthening relationships and building resilient local communities.

The evening created a meaningful space for interaction, celebration, and shared experiences. A key outcome of the event was the formation of many new connections and friendships among attendees. Several participants expressed a strong interest in becoming volunteers and supporting future Dialogue Society activities, as well as bringing more people from their networks to upcoming events. This positive response demonstrated the lasting impact of the gathering and its success in fostering a sense of belonging and active citizenship.

The event was part of the Neighbours Are Connecting Project – Gateshead, funded by Gateshead Council and the Community Foundation North East. Their support played a vital role in making this special gathering possible and in strengthening community relationships across the borough.

Overall, the 5th Annual Gateshead Community Dialogue Christmas Event served as a powerful example of how inclusive community initiatives can bring people together, build trust, and inspire ongoing engagement and collaboration within local communities.
