The 5th Annual Gateshead Ramadan Iftar & Dialogue Dinner, organised by the Dialogue Society North East Branch, brought together around 160 participants from diverse faith and non-faith communities, local organisations, and public institutions. Held under the theme “Building Community Trust,” the event created a vibrant and inclusive space that celebrated friendship, dialogue, and shared values during the holy month of Ramadan.
Delivered as part of the Gateshead Neighbours Are Connecting Project, the event was organised in partnership with NEDES, Gateshead Council, Community Foundation North East, and St Mary’s Heritage Centre. The evening reflected a strong spirit of collaboration, bringing together community leaders, faith representatives, and residents in a welcoming environment.
The programme featured a rich and engaging line-up including welcome remarks by Coordinator of the Dialogue Society North East, and contributions from distinguished guests such as Talha Ozleblebici (Chair of NEDES), Very Rev’d Geoff Miller (HM Deputy Lord-Lieutenant), and Freda Geddes (Mayor of Gateshead). The event also included a live sand art performance, interfaith prayer, live music and poetry, as well as interactive activities such as Kahoot and “Pass the Parcel,” creating a lively and joyful atmosphere throughout the evening.
A key highlight of the event was the interfaith prayer led by representatives from different traditions, followed by the call to prayer (adhan) marking the time to break the fast. Guests then shared a traditional iftar meal, providing an opportunity to connect, reflect, and build meaningful relationships across communities. The launch of the Dialogue Circle initiative and the presentation of the Iftar-ME project further showcased ongoing efforts to deepen engagement and strengthen community participation.
