The 5th Annual Hartlepool Dialogue Iftar  Dinner, organised by the Dialogue Society North East Branch, brought together over 100 guests from diverse faith and non-faith communities, local organisations, and public institutions. Held under the theme “Building Community Trust,” the event took place at Hartlepool Town Theatre, Creative Hartlepool, creating a vibrant and welcoming setting for an evening of dialogue, cultural exchange, and shared experience.

Delivered in partnership with NEDES and with the support of Hartlepool Borough Council, the event reflected a strong collaborative effort to bring communities together. The programme featured a rich combination of speeches, cultural performances, and interactive activities, highlighting the spirit of Ramadan through compassion, generosity, and unity.

The evening opened with welcoming remarks by Tugay Yalcin, Regional Director of the Dialogue Society North East, followed by keynote contributions from Dr Kate Gillen, HM Deputy Lord-Lieutenant. Additional speeches were delivered by Talha Ozleblebici, Chair of NEDES, and Helen Wilson, Hartlepool District Commander Superintendent, each emphasising the importance of dialogue, community cohesion, and shared values.

The programme also included a live sand art performance, the launch of the Dialogue Circle initiative, and the presentation of the Iftar-ME project, alongside interactive elements such as a Kahoot quiz. A key highlight of the evening was the interfaith prayer, followed by the recitation of the adhan (call to prayer), marking the moment for guests to break their fast together. Participants then enjoyed a multicultural iftar meal, accompanied by a warm atmosphere of friendship, live engagement, and meaningful conversations.

Impact

The Hartlepool Dialogue Iftar Dinner continues to grow each year, strengthening its role as a key platform for bringing communities together across differences. By creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, the event fostered meaningful dialogue, encouraged new connections, and reinforced a sense of belonging among participants.

Through shared cultural and spiritual experiences—including interfaith prayer, communal dining, and interactive activities—the evening helped to break down barriers and build trust between individuals from diverse backgrounds. The collaboration between local organisations and public institutions further demonstrated the importance of partnership in addressing social challenges and promoting cohesion.

Ultimately, the event highlighted the power of dialogue and community engagement in creating lasting friendships, celebrating diversity, and contributing to a more connected and harmonious society in Hartlepool and beyond.
