The Gateshead XP College Iftar Dinner, organised by the Dialogue Society North East Branch in collaboration with Gateshead XP College, brought together around 100 participants including students, parents, teachers, and wider community representatives. Held under the theme “Building Community Trust,” the event created a meaningful and inclusive space for young people and the wider community to come together during the holy month of Ramadan.
Delivered as part of the Neighbours Are Connecting Project, the event was supported by Community Foundation North East, Gateshead Council, and NEDES. The programme reflected a strong partnership between education and community organisations, highlighting the importance of engaging young people in dialogue and shared experiences.
The evening featured welcoming remarks from both the Dialogue Society and school leadership, alongside contributions from Tugay Yalcin, Regional Director of the Dialogue Society North East. The programme included a theme video on Building Community Trust, an informative presentation on Ramadan, and a live spiritual ney music performance. Interactive elements such as a Kahoot quiz and raffle added a lively and engaging atmosphere, particularly for the young participants.
A key moment of the evening was the interfaith prayer, followed by the recitation of the adhan (call to prayer), marking the time to break the fast. Guests then shared a traditional iftar meal, including a dedicated “Ramadan Corner,” providing an opportunity for learning, reflection, and connection. The evening concluded with reflections, table discussions, and a group photo, leaving participants with a strong sense of unity and belonging.
Impact
The Gateshead XP College Iftar Dinner demonstrated the powerful role of schools as spaces for community cohesion and intercultural dialogue. By bringing together students, families, educators, and community members, the event fostered mutual understanding and strengthened relationships across diverse backgrounds.
As part of the Neighbours Are Connecting Project, the initiative highlighted the importance of engaging young people in building trust, promoting inclusion, and celebrating diversity from an early age. The event empowered youth to take an active role in dialogue, encouraging values of empathy, respect, and friendship.
Ultimately, the evening reinforced a clear and positive message: that unity, togetherness, and community spirit begin with young people, and through shared experiences like this, stronger and more connected communities can be built for the future.
