On Saturday 23rd August, Blyth’s Market Pavilion transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity, learning, and community celebration as we hosted Cultural Awareness Day, a community-led event funded by Blyth Celebrates, Northumberland County Council, and Market Pavilion. The event welcomed over 1,700 people from diverse backgrounds, creating an inclusive space where cultures were shared, explored, and celebrated together.
What is Cultural Awareness Day?
Cultural Awareness Day is an annual community celebration designed to promote understanding, respect, and dialogue between cultures. Through creative expression, shared traditions, and interactive experiences, the event encourages people to learn about one another’s heritage while recognising shared values. It provides a welcoming platform for communities to come together, celebrate diversity, and strengthen social cohesion through art, food, and conversation.
Programme Highlights
The day featured a wide range of hands-on art workshops, allowing participants of all ages to engage directly with cultural practices from around the world. Activities included South Asian henna and face painting, Italian calligraphy, Balkan macramé, Chinese papercraft, sand art, candle and hat painting, balloon modelling, and sensory art experiences.
Live cultural performances brought additional energy to the programme, including a captivating sand art storytelling performance and a vibrant Bollywood Indian dance, which attracted large audiences and encouraged participation. The multicultural food corner, representing around 20 different cultures, offered visitors the chance to sample traditional foods, with a strong emphasis on vegan, vegetarian, and nut-free options, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.
Impact for Blyth and Northumberland
Cultural Awareness Day had a significant positive impact on Blyth and the wider Northumberland community. The event strengthened community connections by bringing together residents from different cultural, social, and age groups in a shared celebration. It increased participation in arts and culture, supported wellbeing through joyful and creative engagement, and boosted local pride by showcasing Blyth as an open, welcoming, and culturally rich town. By encouraging dialogue, understanding, and collaboration, the event contributed meaningfully to social cohesion and highlighted the importance of inclusive community spaces within Northumberland.
