Communities across Northamptonshire embraced intercultural unity at an iftar dinner, a collaborative event hosted by Northamptonshire Police and the Dialogue Society, with support from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service. This annual gathering, held on March 17 at the Sikh Gurdwara, St James Mill Road, welcomed over 100 attendees from diverse faiths and cultures, focusing on the theme of ‘peace and unity’ during Ramadan.

Organised to foster dialogue, the event featured speakers from various backgrounds, emphasizing the importance of community in a period marked by increased anxiety and the collective responsibility to alleviate human suffering. Hakk Ozal from the Dialogue Society highlighted the universal values of compassion, reflection, and community spirit inherent in Ramadan, which resonate across all faiths and traditions, drawing on the teachings of Islam to advocate for peace and unity.

The evening was further enriched by contributions from students at Northampton School for Boys and Sunnyside Academy, who shared their poetry. The iftar commenced with the adhan, performed by Hashir Khan from Victoria Primary Academy, and guests enjoyed an interactive quiz about different faiths, led by PC Tim Walker and Vice Lord Lieutenant Morcea Walker.

Speakers, including Superintendent Rachel Handford and Dominic Goble, Deputy Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, underscored the event’s significance in promoting dialogue, understanding, and empathy at a critical juncture for both the nation and the world. This collaborative effort between the police, fire services, and the Dialogue Society exemplified the power of community engagement in celebrating diversity and fostering unity.
