On 10th December 2022, a Community Christmas and New Year celebration was held in Gateshead as the second festive event in the North East, bringing together residents, partners, and local leaders under the theme “Christmas Is Community.” The event was organised by the Dialogue Society in collaboration with NEDES Newcastle, The Comfrey Project, Bensham Grove Community Centre, and the Gateshead Coordinating Team.

The organisers were honoured to welcome David Wilson Bavaird Esq., High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, and Deputy Mayor of Gateshead Council Cllr Robert Waugh, who delivered inspiring speeches highlighting the importance of community, solidarity, and shared responsibility during the festive season. Hakan Akarlı, Co-Founder of North East Diversity, Education and Solidarity, opened the event with welcoming remarks reflecting on the journey and values behind the initiative.

Guests enjoyed a warm and inclusive programme while sharing traditional Anatolian cuisine prepared by volunteers. Creative activities included macramé Christmas ornament workshops, personalised calligraphy Christmas cards and face painting and henna art .

The festive atmosphere was enhanced by live music from the Play Four Peace Band, followed by performances from Gateshead community musicians Irenka and Alison, who performed jazz and Christmas songs. Interactive games and a raffle added to the celebratory spirit.

This event demonstrated the power of partnership and volunteer engagement in strengthening community bonds and celebrating shared values, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
