The 11th Gateshead Community Corner, held on Saturday 17th January at Bensham Grove Community Centre, was another inspiring and successful gathering that brought local residents, community leaders, and organisations together in a spirit of connection and collaboration. Running from 11:00 to 13:00, the event welcomed a growing number of attendees, reflecting the continued success and expansion of this much-valued community initiative.

The morning featured a warm and welcoming community breakfast, creating a relaxed space for meaningful conversations and new connections. Attendees also benefited from a series of engaging talks focused on building community trust and raising awareness of hate crime, delivered by an excellent lineup of guest speakers. Contributions from Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Borough Council, and Jonathan Aibi, Representative of the Gateshead Liberal Democrats, highlighted the importance of civic engagement and inclusive dialogue. In addition, Cheryl Wright from Healthwatch provided valuable insights into local health services and community support, ensuring attendees left with practical knowledge and resources.

The event was widely regarded as a great success, with strong participation, positive feedback, and a vibrant atmosphere throughout. As the 11th edition of Community Corner, it continues to grow in reach and impact, demonstrating the power of consistent community engagement and partnership working.

Impact and Contribution to Gateshead

This event forms part of the “Gateshead Neighbours Are Connecting Project”, supported by the Community Foundation, Gateshead Council, NEDES, and Bensham Grove Community Centre. Through initiatives like Community Corner, the project plays a vital role in strengthening social ties, encouraging inclusivity, and fostering a sense of belonging across Gateshead’s diverse communities.

By providing a platform for open dialogue on important issues such as community trust and hate crime awareness, the project actively contributes to creating safer, more informed, and more resilient neighbourhoods. It empowers residents with knowledge, connects them with local services, and builds confidence to engage with civic and community life. The involvement of local leaders and organisations further enhances collaboration, ensuring that community voices are heard and valued.

Importantly, the continued growth of Community Corner reflects its effectiveness in addressing social isolation and promoting wellbeing. By bringing people together regularly in a welcoming and supportive environment, the project strengthens relationships between individuals and communities, helping to build a more cohesive and connected Gateshead.
