King Athelstan Primary School recently hosted a captivating event titled “Life of a Chickpea” for its Year 5-6 students. This inspiring program, designed to promote understanding and appreciation of British values, brought together 120 enthusiastic students for an hour of enriching activities and discussions.

The event featured 45 minutes of thought-provoking speeches, followed by an engaging Q&A session. It aimed to emphasize the significance of living together harmoniously and respecting one another. Esteemed speakers from various backgrounds shared their insights, including Iysha Arun from the Dialogue Society, Michael Johns-Perring from St Andrew and St Marks Church, and Vincent Daly from Kingston Liberal Synagogue.

Each speaker provided a unique perspective on community values. Iysha Arun highlighted the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding between different cultures. Michael Johns-Perring spoke about the Christian principles of love, respect, and community cohesion. Vincent Daly shared the Jewish perspective on respect and caring for one’s neighbor, drawing on his rich experiences from Kingston Liberal Synagogue.

The session concluded with the serving of Noah’s Pudding, a traditional dessert symbolizing diversity and shared community, to all the students. This delightful treat not only pleased the young attendees but also served as a practical demonstration of the day’s themes of unity and mutual respect.

During the Q&A session, students had the opportunity to interact with the speakers, asking insightful questions and deepening their understanding of the discussed values. The interaction was both educational and inspiring, providing a platform for the children to express their thoughts and curiosities.

The feedback from the children was overwhelmingly positive. They expressed their enjoyment of the event and their appreciation for the diverse perspectives shared. Many students remarked on how the session had opened their eyes to the importance of respect and community in everyday life.

Overall, the “Life of a Chickpea” event was a resounding success, reinforcing the importance of British values among the students. It not only educated them on the significance of living together harmoniously and respecting each other but also celebrated the rich cultural and religious diversity that enhances the community.

King Athelstan Primary School is proud of the enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from its Year 5-6 students and looks forward to organizing more events that foster understanding, respect, and community spirit among its students.
