On 3rd of December 2022, a Community Christmas Get-Together was held in Benwell–Fenham, Newcastle, bringing local residents together to celebrate the festive season under the theme “Christmas is Community.” The event was organised by the Dialogue Society in collaboration with North East Diversity, Education and Solidarity (NEDES), and Riverside Community Health Project.
The gathering was opened with welcoming remarks from Mehmet Evren, Community Engagement Volunteer at the Dialogue Society, and Kate Mukungu, Chief Executive Officer of Riverside Community Health Project. The event was further honoured by the presence of MP Chi Onwurah, who delivered an address highlighting the importance of community spirit, solidarity, and togetherness during the Christmas period.
Participants enjoyed a warm and inclusive programme featuring traditional Anatolian cuisine prepared by volunteers, live music by the Art 4 Peace Band, and a macramé art workshop. These activities created opportunities for meaningful interaction and cultural exchange among attendees.
This celebration in Benwell–Fenham demonstrated the vital role of volunteer-led initiatives in bringing communities together and reinforcing shared values of connection, inclusion, and mutual support during the festive season.
