Newcastle Scriptural Reasoning Group is proud to mark its third anniversary. Established in partnership with the Newcastle Cathedral Bible Study Group and the Dialogue Society, the group provides a unique forum for thoughtful discussion on faith and secular topics from the perspectives of the Abrahamic faiths and other religious traditions.
The journey of the group began during Interfaith Week 2023, with the inaugural session focusing on the theme of Neighbouring. Since then, the group has explored a wide range of topics including Human Rights, Marriage, Family Life, Education, Prophecy, Daily Prayers, Creation, Fasting, and many more.
Over the past three years, Newcastle Cathedral has served as the home of the group, providing a welcoming space for interfaith learning and dialogue. Members have also visited a variety of local faith communities, including:
Newcastle Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha
Heaton Mosque and Islamic Centre
Bensham Grove Community Centre
In addition, the group organised an interfaith visit to Manchester, hosted by the Manchester Central Scriptural Reasoning Group. Participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences and perspectives, culminating in a visit to Manchester Cathedral.
The group continues to meet on the last Saturday of each month, offering a regular opportunity to learn from one another and to deepen understanding across faiths. Scriptural Reasoning – the practice of reading and reflecting on sacred texts together – lies at the heart of these gatherings. This method fosters respectful dialogue, encourages critical reflection, and strengthens relationships between individuals from diverse religious backgrounds.
Through these discussions and visits, Newcastle Scriptural Reasoning Group has made a significant contribution to interfaith dialogue in the region, promoting mutual understanding, respect, and community cohesion. The group exemplifies how thoughtful engagement with religious texts and lived experiences can build bridges across faiths, enrich personal understanding, and support shared values in contemporary society.
