North East Volunteers

During Ramadan 2026, the IftarMe project demonstrated its powerful impact in the North East of England, where the 18th participating host family welcomed 45 individuals to share an iftar meal. This gathering brought together people from diverse backgrounds, creating a warm and inclusive environment centred on hospitality, dialogue, and mutual respect. The event highlighted how simple acts of sharing food and conversation can foster meaningful relationships, strengthen social ties, and promote a deeper sense of community cohesion.

IftarMe is a UK-wide, community-led initiative designed to connect individuals with Muslim families during Ramadan to experience iftar—the meal that breaks the daily fast at sunset. The project is facilitated by the Dialogue Society, an organisation with over 20 years of experience in promoting intercultural and interfaith dialogue. By moving these interactions into homes, IftarMe creates more personal and impactful experiences than traditional large-scale events.

Rooted in the values of inclusivity and openness, IftarMe invites people of all backgrounds to participate at no cost. Through shared meals and meaningful conversations, the initiative encourages understanding across cultural, social, and religious differences. As seen in the North East gathering, IftarMe continues to play a vital role in building stronger, more connected, and resilient communities across the UK.
