Biography of Sam Gyimah

Sam Gyimah was elected as the Member of Parliament for East Surrey in May 2010. He was appointed as a Government Whip in October 2013, having previously been Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Prime Minister. His interests include the economy, education, planning and the local environment as well as International Development issues.

Sam was born in Beaconsfield, Berkshire but spent ten years of his childhood in Ghana, after his mother, a nurse, moved after she separated from his father and brought up her three children on her own. Sam was educated at a state school in Ghana and a comprehensive college in Hertfordshire before going on to earn a place at Somerville College, Oxford University, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He worked in the City for five years before leaving to use his experience to help build and develop a number of small businesses in the training, recruitment and internet sectors. He was voted CBI Entrepreneur of the Future in 2005.

Having served as School Governor of an inner London school and on the Board of a housing association, he then decided to take the plunge into politics, motivated by the positive role education had played in his own life and his desire to make that possible for all.

He is a supporter of a number of local charities including the Tandridge District Voluntary Council and St Catherine's Hospice, and in 2008 ran the London marathon for the Down’s Syndrome Assocation.

Session Summary

In an interactive interview with a member of the Dialogue Society staff Sam Gyimah MP will explore his journey to success, discussing the challenges that he faced, the inspiration, attitudes and actions that helped him overcome these and his advice to participants at the start of their journeys. A Q&A session will follow the interview, and participants, staff and speakers will have time to interact informally over refreshments.

The format of sessions with 'role model' speakers will be as follows:

6.40pm: Interview with speaker
7.20pm: Question and answer session
7.50pm: Closing remarks
7.55pm: Refreshments
8.15pm: End

About the Success School

The Dialogue Society Success School is a six-week programme of weekly evening seminars intended to help inspire, encourage and equip young people to aspire to and work towards success.

Participants will hear the inspirational stories of a range of successful professionals in a friendly and interactive environment (4 sessions). In addition, experts from performance coaching and self-help backgrounds will provide them with practical guidance on positive thinking and on setting and achieving manageable goals from (2 sessions). Dialogue Society staff will lead an additional practical session looking at key skills such as leadership and time management. The School will establish an ongoing network through which participants, staff and speakers can share ideas and opportunities. Click here for further information and poster.

Who's it For?

The School is primarily intended for young people of 16-21 years of age, and the Dialogue Society will initially advertise in North London. We hope to welcome participants from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
