Meeting with Sister Dalia Mogahed

Tue, 23 Mar 2010 00:00 in Outreach & Participation

The Dialogue Society was given priority seats for 'An Audience with Sister Dalia Mogahed,' a seminar jointly organised by the The Coexistence Trust and Islamic Circles at the House of Lords. Dalia spoke of the huge research project undertaken by the Gallup Centre and of how sometimes the findings contradicted stereotyped misconceptions of Muslims. The discussion underpinned the importance of continued research in understanding different perceptions in the Muslim world.

Dalia Mogahed is an American Muslim of Egyptian origin. She is the Executive Director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies, a non-partisan research centre that provides data and analysis to reflect the views of Muslims all over the world. She was selected as an advisor by President Barack Obama on the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

She has co-authored with Professor John L. Esposito, "Who Speaks for Islam?: What a Billion Muslims Really Think". Her analysis has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy magazine, the Harvard International Review, the Middle East Policy journal, and many other academic and popular journals.

Amir Sabanovic met with Dalia Mogahed before the programme and introduced the work of the Dialogue Society. She expressed a keen interest in the work carried out and promised to visit the Dialogue Society on her next trip to London.
