Dialogue Society Book Group

The Dialogue Society Book Group explores the capacity of books to provide windows into different cultural and intercultural worlds. We choose a series of quality novels to read and then discuss together at relaxed, sociable gatherings at the Dialogue Society. Participants are also welcome to suggest books for a future session.

Aims and Objectives

  • to bring communities together to meet new people and learn something new
  • to provide windows into different cultural and intercultural worlds through well-known books
  • to encourage reading in a sociable atmosphere
  • to introduce participants to well-known world classics
  • to encourage critical thinking and deeper engagement with stories
  • to contribute to diversify people’s reading list

Methodology

Participants need to find a copy of the book chosen for each meeting and will need to read it prior to the meeting. We will have a conversation about the book and our responses to it. Discussion may cover:

  • The quality of the storytelling
  • authenticity and accuracy with which a historical/cultural situation is portrayed
  • Our personal responses to it

Participants do not need to be an expert on literature or anything else to join in. The group should be enjoyable for anyone who enjoys a good book and likes discovering new ones.

Project Impact

The project has been going on for almost 10 years now. This shows it has a considerable interest in the book group gatherings. So far, we have covered 43 quality novels, most of them are world classics by world-famous authors. The project will certainly continue in the future if there is enough interest.
