Jackie’s doctoral thesis (2006) “The Border and Boundaries of Social Cohesion”, critically
examined the complexities of relationships within and between diverse communities
through an ethnographic study of community responses to domestic and racial violence.
Before university, Jackie was a community activist at local, regional and national levels,
initiating, developing and implementing strategic, pragmatic and policy approaches to
urban regeneration, through collective action. In 1992, Jackie was awarded the M.B.E. for
‘services to the community’ and the Jameson Award for ‘combating urban poverty’.
