Professor of Communication and Director of the Graduate Program in Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst
Donal Carbaugh is Professor of Communication and Director of the Graduate Program in
Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is currently a Samuel F.
Conti Faculty Research Fellow, which is the highest award for research, at the University.
He has also been a finalist for the university’s outstanding teaching award. In 2007-2008, he
was Fulbright’s Distinguished Professor and Bicentennial Chair of North American Studies
at the University of Helsinki, Finland. From 2005-2010, he was a member of the Research
Advisory Group for the Security Needs Assessment Project of the United Nations Institute
for Disarmament Research in Geneva. In 1992, he was elected Visiting Senior Member
at Linacre College, Oxford University, England, which is a lifetime position. His general
interests focus upon cultural philosophies of dialogic communication, the environment,
and the ways culturally distinctive practices get woven into international and intercultural
interactions.
